What We Do
Led by Elena Knappen, Lantern Coaching is an education consulting firm that works directly with school and system level leaders to increase their leadership impact, and create lasting change throughout their organizations. We offer a variety of services to help you achieve your goals, including leadership coaching, site visits, priority planning, and implementation support. Our work is tailored to what you need, and evolves as you do. Our goal is simple: to support you in becoming the leader you want to be, bringing to life the vision that you have for your organization.
Why a Lantern?
Our consciousness (awareness of self and the world around us) changes and narrows as we grow older. Professor and author Alison Gopnik describes children’s consciousness as a lantern, indiscriminately shining light in all directions, fueling curiosity and a sense of possibility. By contrast, she likens the adult consciousness to a flashlight: willful, intentional, and limited. Put simply, as we know more, we see less.
As a leader, what might happen if we purposefully cultivate a lantern consciousness? What might we see? How might it impact our understanding of challenges, and even successes? How might we proceed and lead differently?
